Multidisciplinary tumor board – team decision
The tumor board is a meeting of multiple medical specialists who, based on your findings, make a treatment plan. The team of doctors usually includes an , , and , with and involved as needed. The tumor board decision is written and contains a treatment proposal.

What you receive

You receive a consilium decision. The decision contains 3 key pieces of information: 1. Diagnosis of the disease in Latin terminology 2. of the tumor 3. Treatment decision.

What follows immediately

Every institution that treats malignant diseases has its own standard procedures for scheduling patients for different types of treatment.

Will I attend the tumor board?

The patient always attends the tumor board. After the consilium examination is completed, you receive the treatment decision in written form, on a document called the consilium decision.

When will I get the conclusion?

If you do not receive the consilium decision immediately, you will be given instructions on when and how to obtain it.

Second opinion?

You have the right to copies of all findings and the tumor board record and to consult another facility for an additional opinion.

When to request additional explanation?

  • If anything in the written form is unclear to you.
  • If there are special circumstances (pregnancy, chronic conditions).
  • If you want to know what happens if the plan changes during treatment.

How to read the tumor board conclusion

  • Diagnosis and cancer – based on histology and imaging.
  • Tumor biology – , , , .
  • Treatment plan – sequence and duration, e.g., neoadjuvant therapy → surgery → radiation.
  • Follow-ups – when are the first check-ups and who is the contact person.

Treatment may involve surgery first, or the use of certain anti-tumor medications before surgery (), and sometimes preoperative as well.
